Let's Draw a Burger Samurai

Let's Draw a Burger Samurai

Our Let's Draw series featuring ToadyCo continues with a battle ready samurai burger!

Check out our pilot episode where we drew a chill soda drinking Grim Reaper.

The second episode of Let's Draw will remind you of doodling epic scenes in the corners of your notebook instead of paying attention in math class.

Products Used

  • Standard Pencils. Matthew uses the Standard Pencil #3 from this pack for preliminary and final sketches. Keep it loose, simple, make mistakes, and find your proportions.
  • Standard Pens. A simple but powerful set of pens perfect for inking a wide variety of illustration styles. Matthew is using the Toothy Fountain Pen saying “it's a good choice when you want your work to have a hand-drawn analog look."
  • Mr. Marker. Classic water-based markers in a high-quality digital brush. Well-worn and fine tuned to perfectly emulate the qualities of your favorite childhood markers.
  • Phantom Paper. High-resolution, seamless paper textures that are seperated into layers of texture and highlight so you can get the look of your work actually being printed on paper.

Today we're drawing a Samurai Burger. Use the guide below to supplement the video, and get drawing!

01. Start with a loose sketch.

Keep it loose, simple, and don't be afraid to make mistakes. All you have to focus on is starting and letting the ideas flow. Use a color to contrast your upcoming ink lines to help keep things organized.

02. Ink Your Work.

Using your sketch as a guide, create a new layer and refine your sketch and add more details. You can do this as many times as you need and add anything you forgot. Once you're happy you can start inking. Matt's using the Toothy Fountain Pen from Standard Pens. A textured flexible brush that will give character to your lines.

03. Color your work.

Matt is using Mr. Marker brushes to color in this battle burger. The great thing about using markers in real life is their unpredictability and imperfection giving your designs a warm charm. Model that in the digital world by letting yourself be loose and expressive.

04. finishing effects.

A paper texture like from Phantom Paper or Paper Boy will make your work look more realistic. These texture packs are set up for you to be easy to use so you can drop your work in our start drawing in them right from the beginning.

About the Artist

Matthew Shultz grew up in Michigan obsessed with comics, cartoons, role playing games, and fantasy movies.

His favorite things to draw are still creatures and characters that wouldn’t look out of place in a television advertisement for action figures from 1986.

He lives in Seattle with his spouse, children, and several excellent animals. He hopes you enjoy his artwork, and he would be glad to make some for you.
